Sydney’s Wrist Specialist

Dr Nicholas Smith

MB BS (Hons), FRACS, FAOA

Dr Nicholas Smith was born in England, to Australian parents, the year man first walked on the moon. His family moved back to Sydney in the early 1970’s, so that his father could begin his practice as a plastic surgeon. He was determined to follow his father’s footsteps from a young age.

His journey to become a wrist specialist began whist he was a medical student at the University of Sydney. During this time he became fascinated by the hand and the musculoskeletal system. After graduating in 1992, he began hospital training at Royal North Shore Hospital, with the intent of pursuing orthopaedic training. He started on the orthopaedic training program in 1998 and developed twin interests of hand surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery. He was awarded his fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2001, in orthopaedic surgery.

Under the guidance of Professor Michael Tonkin, he began further training in hand, shoulder and elbow and paediatric orthopaedic surgery, both in Sydney and at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.

He began his practice as wrist surgeon in Sydney in 2003, at the Children’s Hospital Westmead and in private practice at Specialty Orthopaedics. He joined the hand unit at Macquarie University Hospital in 2010.

He has contributed to the training of many orthopaedic and hand surgery trainees, acting as the training representative for the Children’s Hospital Westmead from 2004 until 2012 and the Chairman of the Northside Board of Studies for the Australian Orthopaedic Association from 2009 until 2012.

An Internationally Recognised Wrist Surgeon

He has contributed to research in hand and upper limb surgery, with more than 100 presentations at national and international meetings, and numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. He remains passionately committed to the advancement of hand and wrist surgery, both at a research and clinical level.

Focused on Better Outcomes for Patients From the Southern Highlands, Norwest and Beyond

He understands that in hand surgery, “the devil is in the detail”, both in surgical assessment and technique, and no less in meticulous aftercare. He is a self-proclaimed “helicopter doctor”, closely supervising patients after their surgery, to make sure they do not get off course in their recovery.

If your wrist is troubling you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Dr Nicholas Smith has extensive experience as a wrist surgeon and sees patients from across Sydney and further out, including the Southern Highlands and Norwest areas.
